Bio/Description

Fernand A. Guédou obtained his MD at Université Nationale du Bénin in 1987. After 4 years, during which he worked as a general practitioner in Cotonou, Benin, he was awarded a double sponsorship from WHO. That enabled him to obtain an MSc in medical microbiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1992 and a diploma in Genito-urinary medicine in 1993 with the Society of the Apothecaries of London. On his return home, he worked as a research assistant for 10 years, leading the Microbiology/STI/HIV unit of the Centre for Research in Human Reproduction and Demography (CERRHUD), a WHO collaborating center. His research field of interest was infertility related to genital tract infections. In 2002, he obtained a sponsorship from CONRAD and Family Health International for a training in clinical trials methodology at the University of North Carolina (USA) to conduct a clinical trial on a microbicide vaginal gel, which he coordinated from 2004 to 2007. Since 2004, he has been working in the field of HIV prevention, targeting female sex workers. In 2012, he completed a PhD in epidemiology at Université Laval in Québec, Canada. Since then, he has successively been appointed as a national (2012) and regional (2016) director of the “CHU de Quebec” HIV research projects in West Africa, mainly funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR). He teaches epidemiology and clinical trials methodology as a temporary lecturer at several national universities.
