Bio/Description

Dr. Joyce Siwila-Saasa is a veterinarian, senior lecturer, and researcher in the department of clinical studies at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zambia, with an MSc and PhD in parasitology. She has 14 years of teaching experience at the University of Zambia. She has also held administrative positions at the same institution, such as assistant dean for undergraduate studies from 2014-2018, and is currently the assistant director for undergraduate programs at the Institute of Distance Education.


Dr. Siwila-Saasa is an active researcher and has published over 20 articles in international journals. She is particularly passionate about parasitic zoonoses. She was a recipient of the Programme for institutional University Co-operation between Flemish Inter-University Council scholarship and the University of Zambia and DANIDA scholarship for research on Cryptosporidium and other protozoan parasites in humans and livestock. She was further awarded a grant by the International Foundation for Sciences (IFS) to study the epidemiology of Giardia infections in dairy animals in Zambia. Other than publishing scholarly work, she is a reviewer for several international journals, a role she has played for the past 11 years. She is an associate editor of the Health Press.


Outside of academia, she served as the honorary secretary for the Veterinary Association of Zambia from 2011-2015 and as acting registrar for the Veterinary Council of Zambia from July 2019 – January 2020. She is a member of the Veterinary Association of Zambia and the Zambia Women in Agriculture, Research and Development (ZAWARD).
