Sharon Bright Amanya is a Ugandan immunologist and lecturer in the department of microbiology and immunology at Lira University. She holds an MSc in immunology and clinical microbiology and a BSc in nursing from Makerere University, Kampala. She is passionate about infectious disease research with an ultimate goal of making their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment more accurate, affordable, and accessible in low-income settings. Her group has identified, and is currently validating, targets for the development of a rapid diagnostic test for Typhoid Fever, an endemic disease in Uganda and many sub-Saharan countries. She was a 2018 fellow of the Microbiology and Immunology training for HIV and HIV-related research in the Uganda (MITHU) program, and her research focused on characterizing the genetic and immunologic mechanisms used by HIV-1 elite controllers to suppress HIV disease. She is a member of the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) consortium, Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH), and the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB).
